KESWICK CREAMERY
Cumberland County, PA
Keswick Creamery is a small farmstead cheese operation located on a family dairy farm in south-central PA. The name 'Keswick,' Old English for 'a farm where cheese is made,' reflects the family's interest in the history of cheese-making and the use of traditional methods. All Keswick Creamery cheeses are made with small batches of fresh, unpasteurized milk from the farm's herd of 45 Jersey cows. Susan and Bill Dietrich, who have been dairying since 1974, bought the 100-acre farm in 1978. After graduating from Virginia Tech's dairy science program in 1997, their daughter Melanie Dietrich Cochran returned to the farm. In February 2001, with the help of her brother Ian, Melanie started making cheese. 'An appreciation of authentic, healthful food and farming in a sustainable way led us to cheese-making as a way to provide our milk to local markets in the form of aged, raw milk cheeses,' says Melanie. The family sells their cheeses at the Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom and H Street FRESHFARM Markets.
