TWIN SPRINGS FRUIT FARM
Adams County, PA
Jim Frazee and Eddie Rankin formed a partnership and bought their 80-acre farm in Orrtanna, PA, in 1979. Since the early 1900s the land has produced fruit. Eddie became fascinated with fruit production in 1974 when he left Ireland and came to Adams County to pick apples on a Quaker apple crew. In the past few years, the partnership has diversified their production to include greenhouse crops of tomatoes, salad greens, raspberries and sweet peppers. 'We are committed to biological control of pests in our greenhouse operation,' he says. 'We release predatory insects before pests reach damaging levels, and we constantly monitor the plants for potential problems. In our orchards, we are committed practitioners of integrated pest management (IPM), using naturally occuring predators as our first line of defense. The high summertime humidity in this region makes it impossible to grow rot-free peaches without the use of fungicides, but the materials we use are low-risk and at the lowest possible doses to still be effective.' Twin Springs sells at the Dupont Circle FRESHFARM Market and at other farmers' markets in the Washington, DC, area, including Mt. Vernon on Tuesdays, Annandale on Thursdays, and Takoma Park and Columbia Pike on Sundays. More more information: www.twinspringsfruitfarm.com or 717.334.4582.
